Veni's parents borrowed money to pay her older sister's dowry, but after a year they fell behind in their payments. The loan shark kidnapped Veni, and gave her parents 8 weeks to pay back the loan in full. When Veni's parents couldn't repay the money, she was sold to a rock quarry.
Veni's life in the rock quarry was filled with hunger and violence. She was forced to work carrying things too heavy for her, and her whole body ached from malnutrition and exhaustion. She saw other women and girls subjected to rape and abuse, and even killed when they resisted.
Veni was rescued in 2020, and she was brought to live at The Sylom Children's Home. She receives ongoing counseling for the many horrible things that she has seen and experienced. By God's Grace, she is recovering from both the psychological torture and the malnutrition of the rock quarry. She has started school and is quickly catching up to kids her age. Veni has said that she wants to become an engineer and is always reading books.
