Lakshman's mother sent him to work in a rock quarry. She was promised that the people in the rock quarry would send a monthly salary, but that money never arrived. Lakshman worked in the quarry for over 18 months in the burning heat. He eventually developed boils on his feet, and it became nearly impossible for him to walk. Some older workers helped him wrap his bare feet with rags, but the pain persisted. His feet got infected, and he stayed sick for a very long time.
Lakshman and the other children working in that quarry were eventually located and removed by one of our search and rescue teams. Lakshman immediately started getting medicine to help him overcome the infections that were making him ill. Today, Lakshman is 10 years old, and he attends classes in the 4th grade. He wants to become a teacher, and his favorite class is his native language, Telugu.
