Rayuda's dad worked in construction and made a good living, but a recession put the company he worked for out of business. For two years, he worked sporadically. When Rayuda was 10 years old, he made a deal with a rock quarry and sold her.
The quarry was horrible, and Rayuda cried and cried. There was nothing for her to do, but to try and stay out of the way of the cruel supervisors. For over a year, she shoveled rocks and broke stones. Totally unexpectedly, another whispered to her that someone was going to rescue them. A couple of days later, she and the other girls were awoken by an undercover rescue team. Silently, they climbed a rope ladder, slipped through a hole in the fence, and walked barefoot several miles to waiting vans.
They were taken to a safe house where they rested, got good food and told rescuers about the villages they came from. Many kids found their parents very quickly, Rayuda and her family weren't easy to find, so she came to live at the Children's Home while the search went on. Her parents have never been located, but she started back at school. Today, she wants to learn a trade so that she can provide for herself. Her training costs $1600 (donate the full amount here) or $133 a month for 12 months.
