When Kara's father couldn't repay the loan he took out to cover wedding expenses for his eldest daughter, the loan shark threatened to kill him or take his younger daughters as collateral. The loan shark who took the sisters away dropped them off at a rock quarry. Kara and her sister, Siri, worked in deplorable, inhumane conditions in the quarry. At night, they slept on bare rock surrounded by venomous snakes and filth. During the day, the girls were subjected to the brutal heat of Indian summer and sexual violence from men in the quarry and the supervisors. At times, they both wished to die.
Several older boys escaped the mine one night in 2017, and returned with the authorities who removed all the children from that awful place. Efforts were made to locate the girls parents, but there was no success. After several weeks of recuperation, Kara and Siri came to live at The Sylom Children's Home. Kara has started going to school for the first time. She is in love with books and wants to become a teacher for other children when she gets older. She is so grateful to God for her new life.
