From her earliest memory, Shalini had always worked collecting firewood and cow dung to sell in the village as fuel for cooking. When her family took on a large debt after her father got sick, the loan shark who lent the money was threatening to put her mother in prison. In anguish, Shalini's mother sent her to a rock quarry to have the debt cleared. In the quarry, she was bullied by other children, and her food was often stolen. After 4 years in the quarry, Shalini was rescued by one of our teams.
Today, Shalini is 10 years old. She attends school and is learning to read, write and do math. When she grows up she wants to be a social worker to help kids and families in poverty.
