When Rigo's mother became sick, the whole family chipped in to raise money for her treatment. Rigo volunteered to go work in the rock quarries because he wanted his mother to get well. In the rock quarry, Rigo broke rocks and loaded trucks with the gravel.
From sunrise to sundown, the workers, including the many children, were never allowed to stop. The one exception was their daily noontime meal of rice. Rigo was perpetually hungry, and at times, he was so desperate for food that he stole from other hungry children.
After years of this drudgery, Rigo and the other children were rescued by one of our search and rescue teams. Today, Rigo lives at The CFC Children's Home, and he has started school for the first time. He is 9 years old, and he is studying to catch up to his classmates in the 4th grade. He wants to become a teacher, and his favorite subject is math.
