Chandu's father was a sharecropper, and during a severe drought, he ran up a debt he could not repay. The loan shark came to his house assisted by local police, who regularly take bribes as enforcers for organized crime. The loan shark kidnapped Chandu as repayment for the money and then sold him to a rock quarry.

Chandu fought back, but he was beaten severely by the men who took him. Once in the quarry, he tried to escape again over the fence at night, but the escape failed. The supervisors who caught him tied him to a post for two days in the hot sun. They didn't give him food or water. After that severe punishment, Chandu never stepped out of line again.

Chandu was rescued with 10 other children. Today, he lives in The CFC Children's Home. He has rejoined school. When he grows up, Chandu wants to become a police officer that upholds the law. He enjoys playing cricket with his friends, and his favorite class is Telugu, his local language.
